5:1 And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.
5:2 And when he was come out of the boat, straightway there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
5:2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,
5:3 who had his dwelling in the tombs: and no man could any more bind him, no, not with a chain;
5:3 and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;
5:4 because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been rent asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: and no man had strength to tame him.
5:4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5:5 And always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.
5:5 And constantly night and day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out and gashing himself with stones.
5:6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshipped him;
5:6 And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;
5:7 and crying out with a loud voice, he saith, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, torment me not.
5:7 and crying out with a loud voice, he *said, "What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"
5:8 For he said unto him, Come forth, thou unclean spirit, out of the man.
5:8 For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
5:9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he saith unto him, My name is Legion; for we are many.
5:9 And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he *said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many."
5:10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
5:10 And he [began] to entreat Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
5:11 Now there was there on the mountain side a great herd of swine feeding.
5:11 Now there was a big herd of swine feeding there on the mountain.
5:12 And they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
5:12 And [the demons] entreated Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them."
5:13 And he gave them leave. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the sea, (in number) about two thousand; and they were drowned in the sea.
5:13 And He gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand [of them]; and they were drowned in the sea.
5:14 And they that fed them fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they came to see what it was that had come to pass.
5:14 And their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and [out] in the country. And [the people] came to see what it was that had happened.
5:15 And they come to Jesus, and behold him that was possessed with demons sitting, clothed and in his right mind, (even) him that had the legion: and they were afraid.
5:15 And they *came to Jesus and *observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened.
5:16 And they that saw it declared unto them how it befell him that was possessed with demons, and concerning the swine.
5:16 And those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and [all] about the swine.
5:17 And they began to beseech him to depart from their borders.
5:17 And they began to entreat Him to depart from their region.
5:18 And as he was entering into the boat, he that had been possessed with demons besought him that he might be with him.
5:18 And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was entreating Him that he might accompany Him.
5:19 And he suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go to thy house unto thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and (how) he had mercy on thee.
5:19 And He did not let him, but He *said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and [ how] He had mercy on you."
5:20 And he went his way, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men marvelled.
5:20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone marveled.
5:21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat unto the other side, a great multitude was gathered unto him; and he was by the sea.
5:21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered about Him; and He stayed by the seashore.
5:22 And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and seeing him, he falleth at his feet,
5:22 And one of the synagogue officials named Jairus *came up, and upon seeing Him, *fell at His feet,
5:23 and beseecheth him much, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death: (I pray thee), that thou come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be made whole, and live.
5:23 and *entreated Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; [please] come and lay Your hands on her, that she may get well and live."
5:24 And he went with him; and a great multitude followed him, and they thronged him.
5:24 And He went off with him; and a great multitude was following Him and pressing in on Him.
5:25 And a woman, who had an issue of blood twelve years,
5:25 And a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years,
5:26 and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
5:26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse,
5:27 having heard the things concerning Jesus, came in the crowd behind, and touched his garment.
5:27 after hearing about Jesus, came up in the crowd behind [Him,] and touched His cloak.
5:28 For she said, If I touch but his garments, I shall be made whole.
5:28 For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I shall get well."
5:29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her plague.
5:29 And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
5:30 And straightway Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power (proceeding) from him had gone forth, turned him about in the crowd, and said, Who touched my garments?
5:30 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power [proceeding] from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, " Who touched My garments? "
5:31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
5:31 And His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"
5:32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
5:32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.
5:33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
5:33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth.
5:34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
5:34 And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction."
5:35 While he yet spake, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's (house) saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Teacher any further?
5:35 While He was still speaking, they *came from the [house of] the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?"
5:36 But Jesus, not heeding the word spoken, saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe.
5:36 But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, *said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid [any longer,] only believe."
5:37 And he suffered no man to follow with him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
5:37 And He allowed no one to follow with Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
5:38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he beholdeth a tumult, and (many) weeping and wailing greatly.
5:38 And they *came to the house of the synagogue official; and He *beheld a commotion, and [people] loudly weeping and wailing.
5:39 And when he was entered in, he saith unto them, Why make ye a tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth.
5:39 And entering in, He *said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep."
5:40 And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was.
5:40 And they [began] laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He *took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and *entered [the room] where the child was.
5:41 And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise.
5:41 And taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!").
5:42 And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed straightway with a great amazement.
5:42 And immediately the girl rose and [began] to walk; for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.
5:43 And he charged them much that no man should know this: and he commanded that (something) should be given her to eat.
5:43 And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this; and He said that [something] should be given her to eat.
5:1 And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.
