22:1 "You shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and withhold your help from them; you shall take them back to your brother.
22:1 You shall not watch your neighbor's ox or sheep straying away and ignore them; you shall take them back to their owner.

22:2 And if he is not near you, or if you do not know him, you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall be with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him.
22:2 If the owner does not reside near you or you do not know who the owner is, you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until the owner claims it; then you shall return it.

22:3 And so you shall do with his ass; so you shall do with his garment; so you shall do with any lost thing of your brother's, which he loses and you find; you may not withhold your help.
22:3 You shall do the same with a neighbor's donkey; you shall do the same with a neighbor's garment; and you shall do the same with anything else that your neighbor loses and you find. You may not withhold your help.

22:4 You shall not see your brother's ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and withhold your help from them; you shall help him to lift them up again.
22:4 You shall not see your neighbor's donkey or ox fallen on the road and ignore it; you shall help to lift it up.

22:5 "A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.
22:5 A woman shall not wear a man's apparel, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment; for whoever does such things is abhorrent to the LORD your God.

22:6 "If you chance to come upon a bird's nest, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting upon the young or upon the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young;
22:6 If you come on a bird's nest, in any tree or on the ground, with fledglings or eggs, with the mother sitting on the fledglings or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young.

22:7 you shall let the mother go, but the young you may take to yourself; that it may go well with you, and that you may live long.
22:7 Let the mother go, taking only the young for yourself, in order that it may go well with you and you may live long.

22:8 "When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house, if any one fall from it.
22:8 When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof; otherwise you might have bloodguilt on your house, if anyone should fall from it.

22:9 "You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the whole yield be forfeited to the sanctuary, the crop which you have sown and the yield of the vineyard.
22:9 You shall not sow your vineyard with a second kind of seed, or the whole yield will have to be forfeited, both the crop that you have sown and the yield of the vineyard itself.

22:10 You shall not plow with an ox and an ass together.
22:10 You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.

22:11 You shall not wear a mingled stuff, wool and linen together.
22:11 You shall not wear clothes made of wool and linen woven together.

22:12 "You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of your cloak with which you cover yourself.
22:12 You shall make tassels on the four corners of the cloak with which you cover yourself.

22:13 "If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and then spurns her,
22:13 Suppose a man marries a woman, but after going in to her, he dislikes her

22:14 and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings an evil name upon her, saying, `I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her the tokens of virginity,'
22:14 and makes up charges against her, slandering her by saying, "I married this woman; but when I lay with her, I did not find evidence of her virginity."

22:15 then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the tokens of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate;
22:15 The father of the young woman and her mother shall then submit the evidence of the young woman's virginity to the elders of the city at the gate.

22:16 and the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, `I gave my daughter to this man to wife, and he spurns her;
22:16 The father of the young woman shall say to the elders: "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man but he dislikes her;

22:17 and lo, he has made shameful charges against her, saying, "I did not find in your daughter the tokens of virginity." And yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.
22:17 now he has made up charges against her, saying, 'I did not find evidence of your daughter's virginity.' But here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity." Then they shall spread out the cloth before the elders of the town.

22:18 Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him;
22:18 The elders of that town shall take the man and punish him;

22:19 and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought an evil name upon a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
22:19 they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver (which they shall give to the young woman's father) because he has slandered a virgin of Israel. She shall remain his wife; he shall not be permitted to divorce her as long as he lives.

22:20 But if the thing is true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the young woman,
22:20 If, however, this charge is true, that evidence of the young woman's virginity was not found,

22:21 then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has wrought folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father's house; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.
22:21 then they shall bring the young woman out to the entrance of her father's house and the men of her town shall stone her to death, because she committed a disgraceful act in Israel by prostituting herself in her father's house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

22:22 "If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall purge the evil from Israel.
22:22 If a man is caught lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman as well as the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.

22:23 "If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her,
22:23 If there is a young woman, a virgin already engaged to be married, and a man meets her in the town and lies with her,

22:24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.
22:24 you shall bring both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death, the young woman because she did not cry for help in the town and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

22:25 "But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.
22:25 But if the man meets the engaged woman in the open country, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.

22:26 But to the young woman you shall do nothing; in the young woman there is no offense punishable by death, for this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor;
22:26 You shall do nothing to the young woman; the young woman has not committed an offense punishable by death, because this case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor.

22:27 because he came upon her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her.
22:27 Since he found her in the open country, the engaged woman may have cried for help, but there was no one to rescue her.

22:28 "If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found,
22:28 If a man meets a virgin who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are caught in the act,

22:29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her; he may not put her away all his days.
22:29 the man who lay with her shall give fifty shekels of silver to the young woman's father, and she shall become his wife. Because he violated her he shall not be permitted to divorce her as long as he lives.

22:30 "A man shall not take his father's wife, nor shall he uncover her who is his father's.
22:30 A man shall not marry his father's wife, thereby violating his father's rights.
