44:1 {To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.} We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, [what] work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
44:1 To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old:

44:2 [How] thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; [how] thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
44:2 You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out.

44:3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
44:3 For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them.

44:4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
44:4 You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob.

44:5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
44:5 Through You we will push down our enemies; Through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us.

44:6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
44:6 For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me.

44:7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
44:7 But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us.

44:8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

44:9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
44:9 But You have cast us off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies.

44:10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
44:10 You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.

44:11 Thou hast given us like sheep [appointed] for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
44:11 You have given us up like sheep intended for food, And have scattered us among the nations.

44:12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase [thy wealth] by their price.
44:12 You sell Your people for next to nothing, And are not enriched by selling them.

44:13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
44:13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scorn and a derision to those all around us.

44:14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
44:14 You make us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.

44:15 My confusion [is] continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
44:15 My dishonor is continually before me, And the shame of my face has covered me,

44:16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
44:16 Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the enemy and the avenger.

44:17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

44:18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
44:18 Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps departed from Your way;

44:19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
44:19 But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death.

44:20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
44:20 If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god,

44:21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
44:21 Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

44:22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
44:22 Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

44:23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast [us] not off for ever.
44:23 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever.

44:24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, [and] forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
44:24 Why do You hide Your face, And forget our affliction and our oppression?

44:25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
44:25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground.

44:26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
