16:1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble.
16:1 "These things I have spoken to you, that you may be kept from stumbling.
16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.
16:2 "They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.
16:3 And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
16:3 "And these things they will do, because they have not known the Father, or Me.
16:4 But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.
16:4 "But these things I have spoken to you, that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
16:5 But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
16:5 "But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?'
16:6 But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
16:6 "But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.
16:7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
16:8 And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
16:8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment;
16:9 of sin, because they believe not on me;
16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
16:10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more;
16:10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me;
16:11 of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.
16:11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
16:12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear [them] now.
16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, (these) shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.
16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare (it) unto you.
16:14 "He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose [it] to you.
16:15 All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare (it) unto you.
16:15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose [it] to you.
16:16 A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.
16:16 "A little while, and you will no longer behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me."
16:17 (Some) of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
16:17 [Some] of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What is this thing He is telling us, 'A little while, and you will not behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?"
16:18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith.
16:18 And so they were saying, "What is this that He says, 'A little while'? We do not know what He is talking about."
16:19 Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?
16:19 Jesus knew that they wished to question Him, and He said to them, " Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, 'A little while, and you will not behold Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me'?
16:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
16:20 "Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned to joy.
16:21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world.
16:21 "Whenever a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she remembers the anguish no more, for joy that a child has been born into the world.
16:22 And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.
16:22 "Therefore you too now have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one takes your joy away from you.
16:23 And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.
16:23 "And in that day you will ask Me no question. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you shall ask the Father for anything, He will give it to you in My name.
16:24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.
16:24 "Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.
16:25 These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.
16:25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will speak no more to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father.
16:26 In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you;
16:26 "In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request the Father on your behalf;
16:27 for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
16:27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
16:28 I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.
16:28 "I came forth from the Father, and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again, and going to the Father."
16:29 His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying.
16:29 His disciples *said, "Lo, now You are speaking plainly, and are not using a figure of speech.
16:30 Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
16:30 "Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God."
16:31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
16:31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?
16:32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and (yet) I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
16:32 "Behold, an hour is coming, and has [already] come, for you to be scattered, each to his own [home,] and to leave Me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
16:33 These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

16:8 And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
16:8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment;
16:9 of sin, because they believe not on me;
16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
16:10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more;
16:10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me;
