1:1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, (saying), Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
1:1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom-- We have heard a report from the LORD, And an envoy has been sent among the nations saying, "Arise and let us go against her for battle"--

1:2 Behold, I have made thee small among the nations: thou art greatly despised.
1:2 "Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised.

1:3 The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
1:3 "The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?'

1:4 Though thou mount on high as the eagle, and though thy nest be set among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.
1:4 "Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.

1:5 If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night (how art thou cut off!), would they not steal (only) till they had enough? if grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes?
1:5 "If thieves came to you, If robbers by night-- O how you will be ruined!-- Would they not steal [only] until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, Would they not leave [some] gleanings?

1:6 How are (the things of) Esau searched! how are his hidden treasures sought out!
1:6 "O how Esau will be ransacked, And his hidden treasures searched out!

1:7 All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee on thy way, even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; (they that eat) thy bread lay a snare under thee: there is no understanding in him.
1:7 "All the men allied with you Will send you forth to the border, And the men at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. [They who eat] your bread Will set an ambush for you. (There is no understanding in him.)

1:8 Shall I not in that day, saith Jehovah, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
1:8 "Will I not on that day," declares the LORD, "Destroy wise men from Edom And understanding from the mountain of Esau?

1:9 And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one may be cut off from the mount of Esau by slaughter.
1:9 "Then your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman, In order that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

1:10 For the violence done to thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
1:10 "Because of violence to your brother Jacob, You will be covered [ with] shame, And you will be cut off forever.

1:11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
1:11 "On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem-- You too were as one of them.

1:12 But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.
1:12 "Do not gloat over your brother's day, The day of his misfortune. And do not rejoice over the sons of Judah In the day of their destruction; Yes, do not boast In the day of [their] distress.

1:13 Enter not into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, look not thou on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither lay ye (hands) on their substance in the day of their calamity.
1:13 "Do not enter the gate of My people In the day of their disaster. Yes, you, do not gloat over their calamity In the day of their disaster. And do not loot their wealth In the day of their disaster.

1:14 And stand thou not in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escape; and deliver not up those of his that remain in the day of distress.
1:14 "And do not stand at the fork of the road To cut down their fugitives; And do not imprison their survivors In the day of their distress.

1:15 For the day of Jehovah is near upon all the nations: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy dealing shall return upon thine own head.
1:15 "For the day of the LORD draws near on all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head.

1:16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and swallow down, and shall be as though they had not been.
1:16 "Because just as you drank on My holy mountain, All the nations will drink continually. They will drink and swallow, And become as if they had never existed.

1:17 But in mount Zion there shall be those that escape, and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
1:17 "But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.

1:18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Jehovah hath spoken it.
1:18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau [will be] as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken.

1:19 And they of the South shall possess the mount of Esau, and they of the lowland the Philistines; and they shall possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria; and Benjamin (shall possess) Gilead.
1:19 Then [those of] the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And [those of] the Shephelah the Philistine [plain]; Also, they will possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin [will possess] Gilead.

1:20 And the captives of this host of the children of Israel, that are (among) the Canaanites, (shall possess) even unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, that are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South.
1:20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel, Who are [among] the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Will possess the cities of the Negev.

1:21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be Jehovah's.
1:21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will be the Lord's.
