2:1 And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:
2:1 Now the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break My covenant with you,

2:2 and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?
2:2 and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars. 'But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done?

2:3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be (as thorns) in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
2:3 "Therefore I also said, 'I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.'"

2:4 And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
2:4 And it came about when the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.

2:5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.
2:5 So they named that place Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the LORD.

2:6 Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
2:6 When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went each to his inheritance to possess the land.

2:7 And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.
2:7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD which He had done for Israel.

2:8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
2:8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

2:9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.
2:9 And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

2:10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.
2:10 And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.

2:11 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;
2:11 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals,

2:12 and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.
2:12 and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from [among] the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the LORD to anger.

2:13 And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.
2:13 So they forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

2:14 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
2:14 And the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around [them,] so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

2:15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.
2:15 Wherever they went, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had spoken and as the LORD had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

2:16 And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.
2:16 Then the LORD raised up judges who delivered them from the hands of those who plundered them.

2:17 And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; (but) they did not so.
2:17 And yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do as [their fathers].

2:18 And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
2:18 And when the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge and delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them.

2:19 But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.
2:19 But it came about when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways.

2:20 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice,
2:20 So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, "Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice,

2:21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;
2:21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died,

2:22 that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
2:22 in order to test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk in it as their fathers did, or not. "

2:23 So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
2:23 So the LORD allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.
