5:1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ as well as a partaker in the glory that is to be revealed.
5:1 Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you

5:2 Tend the flock of God that is your charge, not by constraint but willingly, not for shameful gain but eagerly,
5:2 to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it--not for sordid gain but eagerly.

5:3 not as domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock.
5:3 Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock.

5:4 And when the chief Shepherd is manifested you will obtain the unfading crown of glory.
5:4 And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away.

5:5 Likewise you that are younger be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
5:5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you.
5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time.

5:7 Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you.
5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

5:8 Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour.
5:8 Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.

5:9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world.
5:9 Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

5:10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, and strengthen you.
5:10 And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.

5:11 To him be the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
5:11 To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

5:12 By Silva'nus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God; stand fast in it.
5:12 Through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.

5:13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark.
5:13 Your sister church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark.

5:14 Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you that are in Christ.
5:14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
